Lightning Archives: Sukajan is a meticulously curated reissue from the renowned Lightning Archives series, celebrated for its in-depth documentation of vintage fashion and rare archival garments. This long-awaited volume pays tribute to one of Japan’s most unique fashion exports: the Sukajan.
Originating in post-war Japan, the Sukajan—also known as the Yokosuka Jacket—emerged as a souvenir for American servicemen. Combining a familiar American-style baseball jacket silhouette with intricate oriental embroidery of tigers, eagles, dragons, and more, these garments were produced using traditional horizontal swing sewing machines typically reserved for Japanese clothing.
Over time, these vibrant and eye-catching jackets found favour among the youth of Yokosuka, embedding themselves into Japanese street culture. This book captures the golden era of Sukajan production, from the late 1940s to the early 1960s, showcasing rare and beautiful examples of these embroidered masterpieces.
