Bleu de Chauffe.

Bleu de Chauffe is a French leather goods brand rooted in local craftsmanship, responsible manufacturing and the enduring spirit of traditional workwear. Since its creation more than ten years ago, the brand has remained committed to 100% French production, bringing every stage of the process together within a close network of skilled makers and trusted partners.

The name “Bleu de Chauffe” comes from the blue jacket worn by railway workers during the early days of steam travel. These workers were responsible for heating the water and building pressure in the first locomotives, and their practical blue work jackets became known as the “bleu de chauffe”. During the 20th century, the garment was widely adopted by workers and craftsmen for its simple design, robust construction and comfortable, functional fit.

That workwear heritage continues to shape the brand today. Inspired by the bags traditionally carried by tradespeople and artisans, Bleu de Chauffe combines utility, ingenuity, simplicity and authenticity with a distinctly French sense of style. The collections are practical without feeling purely functional, bringing together clean proportions, thoughtful details and a quiet confidence that reflects the pride of a job well done.

Every design, cut and stitch is completed at the Bleu de Chauffe workshop in Saint-Georges-de-Luzençon, in the Aveyron region of southern France. Set beneath the imposing Millau Viaduct, the 1,000-square-metre workshop was created with both environmental responsibility and the wellbeing of its craftspeople in mind. Natural light, sustainable materials and architecture designed to sit in harmony with the surrounding landscape help create an open, pleasant working environment.

Around twenty artisans from across France work within the workshop, preserving specialist leatherworking skills and traditional savoir-faire. Keeping contributors close together also gives the brand greater traceability over every component, helping to reduce transport and minimise its overall environmental footprint.

Bleu de Chauffe’s ecological commitment extends to the materials it selects. Its natural leathers are vegetable-tanned using plant-based agents such as mimosa, chestnut and acacia. The tannery also places particular importance on water treatment, carefully settling and treating water after use before returning it to the river.

Our Bleu de Chauffe collection includes a considered selection of backpacks, briefcases, shoulder bags, totes and smaller accessories. Designed for work, commuting, travel and everyday use, the range combines practical storage with timeless styling. Expect purposeful compartments, strong construction and natural materials chosen to develop character over time.
