Men’s Overshirts & Shirt Jackets

An overshirt gives you the collar and buttoned front of a shirt with room to wear another layer underneath. Depending on its fabric and lining, it can serve as a light jacket or sit beneath a coat. This collection includes plain Fred Perry twill overshirts, Barbour cord and oversized styles, denim options from Lee and Wrangler, and patterned wool designs from Portuguese Flannel.

What Is an Overshirt,? And Is It a Jacket?

An overshirt is generally cut more generously than a standard shirt and often uses a heavier fabric. The terms “shirt jacket” and “shacket” also describe this type of garment, particularly when it has a lining or a more substantial construction. The name alone won’t tell you how warm it is, so check the fabric weight and lining details.

For mild weather, an unlined overshirt worn over a T-shirt may be enough. A lined style provides another option when temperatures drop, while a lighter overshirt can fit beneath a coat. Neither a heavy fabric nor a jacket-like appearance guarantees protection from rain.

Cotton Twill, Corduroy or Denim Overshirts?

Cotton twill overshirts offer a relatively smooth surface and work well if you prefer plain fabrics. The Fred Perry twill and Barbour Yorklane styles shown here are useful starting points. Corduroy adds visible ribbing, giving a solid-coloured overshirt more texture without introducing a pattern.

Men’s denim overshirts bring a different finish, from darker indigo to lighter washes. Compare the Wrangler relaxed denim styles with Lee’s workwear and Lee 101 designs, paying attention to length, pockets and fit. For wool and flannel overshirts, check the composition separately: “flannel” describes a fabric, and the brand name Portuguese Flannel doesn’t mean every garment uses the same material.

How Should an Overshirt Fit?

An overshirt should fasten comfortably over the layer you plan to wear beneath it, without pulling across the chest or restricting your arms. If you mainly wear T-shirts, you may need less room than someone layering over sweatshirts. Compare the chest, sleeve and back-length measurements with a similar garment you already own.

Relaxed and oversized designs already allow additional space, so don’t automatically size up. Dropped shoulders can be part of the intended cut rather than a sign that the size is wrong. Check the model photographs and fit notes together, and consider whether you want the hem to sit near the hips or extend further down.

Black, Navy, Green & Checked Overshirts

A men’s black overshirt pairs easily with blue jeans, grey trousers and a white T-shirt. Navy works with stone chinos and lighter denim, while olive and brown suit darker jeans and cream knitwear. These colours are straightforward choices if you want to wear the overshirt with several different outfits.

For a checked or patterned overshirt, keep the layer underneath plain so the two fabrics don’t compete. The Portuguese Flannel patterns and Barbour houndstooth designs offer alternatives to solid colours. Look at the scale of the pattern as well as its shades: a small check reads differently from a large, contrasting design.

What to Wear Under an Overshirt

A T-shirt is the simplest starting point. Wear the overshirt open to show the layer beneath, or fasten it for more coverage. A fine knit or sweatshirt
