Men's Check Shirts.

Explore men’s check shirts from Barbour, Carhartt WIP and Pike Brothers, from red and blue checks to subtle houndstooth patterns. The selection includes Roamer flannel shirts, the Carhartt WIP Bagley and Barbour’s relaxed Millom shirts and oversized Hatfield overshirt. Choose a pattern to wear with plain denim or chinos, and compare fabric, fit and measurements for wearing buttoned or layered over a T-shirt.

Choosing a Men’s Check Shirt

Checked shirts, plaid and houndstooth

Pattern size and colour contrast make a noticeable difference to how a checked shirt looks. Bold red checks draw attention, while smaller patterns and closely matched colours give a quieter finish. Houndstooth has a distinctive broken check that can look almost like a textured plain fabric from a distance.

This selection brings together Pike Brothers’ checked Roamer and CPO shirts, the Carhartt WIP Bagley and Barbour’s Millom and Hatfield houndstooth designs. Compare the close-up photographs to see the scale of each pattern as well as its colours.

Check shirts and flannel shirts: the difference

Check describes a pattern; flannel describes a fabric. A checked shirt may be made from flannel, but the terms are not interchangeable. Flannel commonly has a soft, brushed surface, while other checked fabrics can feel smoother or more structured.

For a checked flannel shirt, the Pike Brothers 1937 Roamer is one option in this collection. Check the individual fabric description when choosing between shirts, particularly if you want a warmer layer or something less bulky to wear beneath a jacket.

Relaxed shirts and oversized overshirts

Start with how you intend to wear the shirt. For a buttoned fit, look for enough room across the chest and shoulders to move without pulling at the fastening. For layering, allow space for your T-shirt or knitwear underneath.

Barbour’s Millom is described as relaxed, while the Hatfield overshirt has an oversized cut. Those shapes already allow extra room, so compare the measurements before choosing a larger size. Sleeve length and body length matter too, especially if you prefer to wear your shirt untucked.

What to wear with a checked shirt

Pair a red checked shirt with dark indigo jeans and brown boots, or wear blue and beige checks with stone chinos. Grey houndstooth works well with black denim; chestnut tones sit comfortably alongside navy and olive.

A plain white, ecru or grey T-shirt keeps an open checked shirt easy to combine with the rest of an outfit. For a smarter look, choose a subtle pattern, button the shirt and wear it with plain trousers and leather shoes. Keeping the other pieces simple lets the check remain the main point of interest.
