The Studio D’Artisan D4620 GL3 Denim Coverall is built using one of the most historically significant looms in Japanese denim production. The fabric is woven on the Toyoda GL3 shuttle loom, Japan’s earliest power loom, originally developed over half a century ago. Because replacement parts no longer exist, maintaining these machines requires salvaging components from other retired GL3 looms, making the process both labour-intensive and extremely slow. The loom can weave only about five metres of fabric per hour, but the results are unlike anything produced by modern high-efficiency machinery.
Denim woven on the GL3 retains the rugged irregularity and texture that defined vintage workwear fabrics from decades past. To maximise these characteristics, Studio D’Artisan carefully developed an original denim recipe that considers every detail of the weaving process—from the uneven yarn structure and yarn count to rope-dyeing shades and warp–weft density. The result is a 15oz denim with a distinctive surface texture and depth that cannot be replicated by modern, uniformly produced fabrics.
This coverall jacket uses that original GL3 denim to create a classic workwear piece with authentic character. The silhouette features a gentle A-line shape that subtly flares towards the hem, balancing traditional workwear styling with a clean, slightly modern shape. Produced in Japan with meticulous attention to fabric and construction, the D4620 captures the raw charm and rugged texture of historic denim while remaining wearable today.
