Description

This beautiful handcrafted washi paper carp streamer is a timeless celebration of Japanese tradition and craftsmanship. Made in Toyama Prefecture—renowned for its fine Japanese paper—each carp is dyed by hand using katazome, a traditional stencil dyeing technique dating back to the Edo period. The result is a piece that is both vibrant and delicately textured, rich with cultural significance and visual charm.

Originally displayed during Children’s Day in May, these carp (koinobori) symbolise strength, resilience, and the wish for a child’s healthy growth. Today, they are just as cherished as decorative pieces year-round—gracing walls and interiors with their flowing form and hand-dyed beauty.

The studio behind these works was founded in the early Showa era by Keisuke Yoshida (1915–2014), who dedicated his life to preserving and sharing the fading art of washi paper. His passion lives on in every hand-dyed, handcrafted streamer produced in Yatsuo, a place where tradition continues to thrive through skilled artisans and natural materials.
