The Daruma doll is one of Japan’s most iconic symbols of perseverance and hope—an inspiring, hand-painted talisman to help you visualise and realise your goals. This traditional 12 cm Daruma, handmade by a master craftsman in Takasaki, Gunma, carries centuries of cultural symbolism and artistry in its bold form and timeless ritual.
To use, simply make a wish or set a goal, and paint in the left eye. The other eye remains blank until your dream is fulfilled—at which point you complete the face, honouring your achievement. This act of “opening the eyes” is a powerful metaphor for clarity, mindfulness, and commitment to personal growth.
The design of the Daruma is steeped in symbolism: its thick eyebrows resemble a crane, and its moustache echoes the shape of a turtle—animals that represent long life in Japanese tradition. With a weighted, round-bottomed shape that always rights itself, the Daruma also embodies the Zen spirit of resilience—fall down seven times, stand up eight.
