Daruma doll is a traditional Japanese talisman symbolising perseverance, hope and personal commitment. Handmade in Takasaki, Gunma, this 12 cm hand-painted piece is designed to help mark a goal or wish, with one eye painted in when the intention is set and the second completed once it has been achieved.
Made from hand-painted papier-mâché, each Daruma carries rich Japanese symbolism in its bold rounded form. The crane-like eyebrows and turtle-shaped moustache represent longevity, while the weighted base allows the doll to right itself, reflecting the spirit of resilience: fall down seven times, stand up eight.
