EDWIN was born in Japan in 1947, when Mr Tsunemi began importing denim directly from the United States at a time when denim was not yet being manufactured domestically in Japan. Driven by a passion for the fabric and its workwear roots, he went on to establish the EDWIN brand in 1961, creating the first pair of EDWIN jeans. From the beginning, the brand stood for more than simply recreating American denim; it set out to develop, refine and reimagine what denim could become through Japanese craftsmanship, technical knowledge and constant experimentation.
Throughout its history, EDWIN has played an important role in the evolution of denim. In 1963, the brand produced a 16oz ringspun denim jean featuring its distinctive three-colour rainbow selvedge, a detail still associated with EDWIN today. In the 1970s, the brand developed an āold washā to replicate the character of jeans naturally worn in from a rigid state, before going on to invent stone washing in the 1980s, a process that would influence the entire denim industry. By the 1990s, EDWIN had developed its ānew vintageā concept, carefully recreating the subtle beauty of archive denim washes and worn-in character.
Today, EDWIN offers a broad range of denim and clothing that reflects both its history and its modern outlook. From raw and selvedge jeans to washed denim, workwear-inspired pieces, contemporary fits and seasonal collections, the brand combines authentic denim knowledge with a strong sense of variety and everyday wearability. Its world extends beyond jeans, connecting with artists, musicians and creative communities through projects such as the EDWIN Music Channel and its stores across Europe. Rooted in Japanese denim heritage yet always open to new ideas, EDWIN remains a brand defined by craft, experimentation and cultural energy.
