Finding the right size
Start with what you need to carry. For an overnight stay, that might mean a change of clothes, toiletries and a spare layer. A weekend trip may also call for shoes, a jacket or bulkier knitwear. Compare capacity in litres alongside the bag’s dimensions: bags with similar capacities can have different shapes and openings.
Don’t rely on “small” or “medium” alone, as these labels vary between brands. The collection includes Filson Small and Medium Tin Cloth Duffle Bags, the 48 Hour Duffle and an All-Weather 40L option, giving you several designs to compare.
Materials, handles and pocket layouts
Look at the main fabric separately from the handles, trim and lining. Filson’s Tin Cloth models offer one construction to consider alongside the Porter-Yoshida & Co. Flex and Force designs and Carhartt WIP Richmond Small Duffle.
Check the individual specifications for fabric composition, care and weather resistance. A protective fabric or coating doesn’t necessarily make the whole bag waterproof; the seams and fastening matter too.
Think about how you’ll carry a packed holdall. Compare handle length, shoulder-strap options and the bag’s empty weight, especially if you’ll be walking between stations or carrying it for longer periods. External pockets can keep smaller items accessible, while internal compartments help separate them from clothing.
Duffle bags, holdalls and weekend bags
These names often overlap. “Duffle” and “duffel” are alternative spellings, while “holdall” commonly describes a bag with a spacious main compartment and carrying handles. A weekend bag describes the intended use rather than a fixed size.
Choose around your packing needs rather than the name. If you want to use the bag for the gym as well as travel, check whether it has suitable compartments for footwear or used clothing. A separate pouch can help keep these apart where no dedicated compartment is provided.
Colours and travel considerations
Black and navy are straightforward choices for pairing with different luggage. Filson’s dark tan and otter green shades offer alternatives, while olive styles feature elsewhere in the collection.
For flights, compare the bag’s packed dimensions with your airline’s allowance for your ticket. A soft-sided duffle can expand when filled, and “weekend bag” doesn’t automatically mean it qualifies as cabin baggage. Check the weight limit too, allowing for the bag itself as well as its contents.
