A History of J Barbour & Sons

The Barbour story began in 1894 in the Market Place in South Shields, in the North East of England. Today, five generations on, the brand is still family owned and proudly rooted in the same region. Barbour’s headquarters in Simonside, South Shields houses not only the brand offices but also the factory where its most iconic jackets, such as the Bedale and Beaufort, continue to be manufactured by hand.

It is also home to Barbour’s unique repair and re-waxing service, where skilled craftspeople restore jackets and extend their lives for many more years of wear. This dedication to longevity is part of what makes Barbour truly special: each piece is designed not just to be worn, but to be lived in.
