In 1961 Mr. Tsunemi crafted the first pair of Edwin denim jeans from his own denim.Utilising the letters D, E, N, I and M (reversing the M to create a W) he created the brand name 'Edwin'. By 1963 Edwin had produced the world's heaviest ringspun denim jean (16oz), featuring the famous rainbow coloured selvage, which is still used in production today. Edwin revoluntised the washing process and were the first company in the world to develop the 'old wash' (1970's), 'stone washing' (1980) and created the 'new vintage' denim concept in the 1990's. Edwin is an authentic denim brand priding itself on innovation and craftsmanship, utilising exclusive fabrics and fabrication, unique technology, hand wash processes and continual progression in design and fit.

Originally the denim cloth used to make jeans was produced on shuttle looms. These produced a tightly woven cloth by passing a continuous thread backwards and forwards. The resulting fabric was narrow and had finished edges or self-edges, hence the term selvedge. This fabric was relatively costly and slow to produce as were the jeans fashioned from it. When the demand for jeans rose dramatically in the latter half of the 20th century production methods were inevitably altered to create cheaper fabrics that could be produced in higher volumes. Shuttle looms were abandoned in favour of projectile looms which were quicker, which produced wider cloth and which did not use continuous threads. Denim now had unfinished edges with a frayed appearance.

The Nashville is a real classic, unchanged for 20 years. A traditional straight fit with a high rise, designed to be worn high on the hips. This classic was once an integral part of the Japanese EDWIN collection, having been discontinued ten years ago. EDWIN Europe adopted this classic fitting five-pocket denim, continuing to produce it, true to its original form. Featuring copper crotch rivets, donut fly buttons and the only style in the EDWIN denim series to show the original EDWIN woven label on the back pocket and the original leather patch.
Thicker threads and specific tobacco colour threads are used to reinforce the authentic aesthetic. Reinforced half lined, back pockets and Selvage coin pockets are standard on this model. The 14oz Red Listed Selvage fabric currently used within the EDWIN collection was originally developed exclusively with the Nashville in mind. The red / blue cast wears down amazingly from unwashed, which is why this style is only ever available in its true, unwashed form.
