Dr. Martens began with practical purpose before becoming one of the most recognisable footwear brands in the world. Its roots trace back to the Griggs family, who had been making sturdy work boots in Wollaston, Northamptonshire since 1901, and to post-war Germany, where Dr. Klaus Maertens developed an innovative air-cushioned sole while recovering from a broken foot. In 1959, the Griggs family acquired the licence for the sole and reworked it into a distinctive British boot, adding the yellow welt stitch, grooved sole edge, Airwair heel loop and “With Bouncing Soles” slogan. On 1st April 1960, the eight-eye 1460 boot was born.
Originally worn by postmen, factory workers and those who needed dependable everyday footwear, Dr. Martens quickly moved beyond its workwear beginnings. By the late 1960s and 1970s, the boot had been adopted by skinheads, musicians, punks, Two Tone fans and early goths, becoming a powerful symbol of working-class pride, rebellion and self-expression. Pete Townshend of The Who helped push the boot into the cultural spotlight, wearing it as a statement of identity and attitude. From there, each new subculture made Dr. Martens its own, customising, styling and reshaping the boot’s meaning across generations.
Today, Dr. Martens remains a badge of individuality as much as a piece of footwear. Its simple silhouettes, durable construction and unmistakable details allow wearers to make the boots and shoes part of their own style, whether through music, streetwear, festival culture or everyday dress. From the original 1460 to handmade Made In England styles still produced at the Cobbs Lane factory, Dr. Martens continues to balance utility, heritage and attitude -footwear built for comfort and durability, but worn as a statement of confidence, independence and character.
