How to care for raw denim

How to care for raw denim

Raw denim is loved for its authentic feel, rich indigo colour and the way it slowly fades over time to become completely unique to the wearer. Unlike pre-washed denim, raw denim starts stiff and dark, then softens naturally with wear. Here at Jeanstore, we know that caring for your raw denim properly can completely change how your denim will look and last over the years.

The beauty of raw denim jeans is that no two pairs age the same. The way you wear, wash and care for them creates fades and creases that are personal to you.

Wear them before washing

One of the biggest differences with raw denim is that you should avoid washing them too often, especially when they are brand new. Many denim enthusiasts wear their jeans for months before the first wash to allow natural fading to develop.

This helps create those sought-after wear patterns around the knees, pockets and thighs. The denim slowly moulds to your body shape, making the jeans feel more comfortable over time.

Of course, if your denim becomes genuinely dirty or stained, it is absolutely fine to wash it. Raw denim should still be worn and enjoyed in real life.

Spot clean small marks

Instead of putting your jeans into a full wash every time you notice a small mark, spot cleaning can help preserve the colour and fabric.

A damp cloth and a little mild soap can remove most small stains without affecting the rest of the denim. Hanging your jeans outside for fresh air can also help keep them feeling fresh between washes.

This simple habit helps maintain the deep indigo colour for much longer.

How to wash raw denim properly

When it is time to wash your raw denim jeans, gentle care is important.Ā Turn the jeans inside out before washing to help protect the outer dye. Use cold water and a gentle detergent, avoiding bleach or fabric softeners. A delicate machine cycle works well, although hand washing is often considered the best option for preserving raw denim.

Washing in hot water can cause unwanted shrinkage and fade the denim much faster.

Avoid using a tumble dryer

Heat can damage raw denim fibres and affect the fit of your jeans. After washing, it is best to hang them naturally to dry. Allowing them to air dry helps the denim keep its shape and prevents unnecessary shrinkage.

Try to avoid placing them directly against radiators or strong sunlight, as harsh heat can dry out the fabric. Reshaping (pulling/stretching) the jeans slightly while they are damp can also help them dry more naturally whilst retaining their shape.

Indigo transfer is normal

Raw denim contains excess indigo dye, especially during the early stages of wear. This means colour transfer can happen onto lighter fabrics, shoes or furniture.

White trainers, pale sofas and light car seats are often the first things to pick up indigo marks. While this can sound frustrating, it is actually a completely normal part of owning raw denim and is one of the reasons every pair develops its own character over time.

The truth about freezing jeans

A common denim myth suggests placing jeans in the freezer instead of washing them. While freezing may temporarily reduce odours, it does not properly clean the denim or remove dirt and oils.Ā Fresh air, careful spot cleaning and occasional proper washing are far more effective ways to care for raw denim jeans.

Love them and they’ll love you

Raw denim jeans are designed to age naturally and improve over time. With the right care, they can last for years while developing unique fades and character that cannot be replicated. Wearing them regularly, washing them gently and avoiding excessive heat are some of the best ways to protect the denim and enjoy the full raw denim experience.
