Description
Inspired by the resourceful spirit of traditional Japanese workwear, this work shirt reinterprets noragi—the rugged kimono-style garments once worn daily by farmers and labourers—through the skilled hands of modern textile artisans. During a time when cotton was scarce and garments were mended rather than discarded, each stitch carried purpose, and each patch told a story. This shirt pays homage to that history, weaving its legacy into a contemporary form.
Crafted from D'Artisan’s original Noragi Sashiko jacquard fabric, the shirt mimics the character of hand-stitched patchwork using woven textures. Slub yarns in tonal shades and mixed thread types create a nuanced, faded appearance, as though the cloth has already lived a life. The vertical and horizontal stitch patterns shift in direction and density, evoking the warmth of hand-mended garments. When washed, the fabric subtly contracts, forming natural, complex surface irregularities that add depth and individuality.
This version draws from military utility design, rendered in earthy green tones and finished with traditional nut buttons. The result is a garment that blends historic reverence with modern expression—a shirt that feels both timeworn and timeless.

Features
Studio D'Artisan.

This is where is all began. The first of the legendary 'Osaka 5', Studio D'Artisan was founded in 1979 by Shigeharu Tagaki, a designer who had been learning his trade in France. Inspired by French workwear and especially the American jeans craze sweeping Japan in the late sixties and early seventies, Tagaki started reproducing vintage denim on old Toyada G-3 shuttle loom. Disappointed with the poor quality of mass-produced jeans which flooded the market in the 1980s, the company were soon making original denim goods, utilizing designs and productions techniques from the golden age of jeans.

It wouldn't be an overstatement to say that the company was one of the prime reasons for the explosion of interest in Japanese denim in the late nineties and early aughts. In fact, SDA claim that their flagship model 'DO-1' was the first raw selvedge jean produced, making it the granddaddy of Japanese quality denim.
