Jeans style guide: how to choose the best men’s jeans for your wardrobe

A great pair of jeans is something that every man should have in his wardrobe. Owning a well-fitted, good quality pair of jeans has been a men’s style staple for more than half a century – and it isn’t hard to see why. Jeans are versatile, comfortable, they get better with age and the fewer times you wash them the better. But it’s easy to take the effortless style of jeans for granted and settle for a pair that aren’t the best fit or cut for you.

How to measure men’s jeans styles for a perfect fit

Whether you’re a fan of a skinny leg jean, or a more relaxed cut, it’s important to ensure that your jeans are the perfect fit for you. Having to constantly hitch your jeans up or – even worse – having your jeans split at the seams is not a good look. Fortunately, it is incredibly easy to work out the sizing for a well-fitting pair of jeans.

Men’s jeans sizes are simple and represent the width and length of your leg in inches. The width of a pair of jeans is measured the upper corners of the waistband, while the length is measured down the inner seam toward the cuff. If you’re unsure of your jeans size, pick out a pair of trousers that fit you perfectly and measure the width first and then the length. Write down the numbers in order of measurement (e.g. 32/34) and this will give you your accurate jeans size.

Once you know your size, you can try play around with different styles and cuts to find the perfect fit for your look.

Not sure where to begin? Here are five jeans styles every man should know about in 2020.

Which men’s jeans style is right for you?

Skinny Jeans

The newest addition to the men’s jeans family, skinny jeans are fairly self-explanatory. They have an almost skin-tight fit from hip-to-hem. Skinny jeans are associated with a Rock ’n’ Roll aesthetic and are good for adding an edge to your look.

Slim Fit Jeans

Slim fit jeans allow for a tight fit, but one that doesn’t compromise on comfort. Style slim fit jeans with your favourite white tee and a classic pair of Chelsea boots for timeless style.

Straight Leg Jeans

Straight leg jeans are arguably the most iconic style there is. The definitive straight fit jeans – Levi's® 501s™ - were popularised by style icons such as James Dean, Steve McQueen and Robert Redford.

Wide Leg Jeans

The clue is in the name with wide leg jeans. They allow for a more relaxed feel and are perfect for those who prefer a looser fit.

Cropped Jeans

Cropped jeans are having a moment, and it isn’t hard to see why. This fit is perfect for summer, especially when paired with boat shoes or a white tee and white trainers.

Ultimately, the best pair of jeans for you is one that makes you feel comfortable, stylish and good about yourself. The above tips are a useful place to start when it comes to buying new jeans, but only you know the right fit for your personal tastes.
